Cricut and Stencil Technique for Ceramic Makers with Turn Studio
I've always marvelled at the beauty of ceramics. Its construct is so mesmerizing and no matter what the product may be, it gives the product a very professional touch. Very recently i came across a technique used by turn.studio and i loved it. I loved it so much because i love applying the works of cricut whenever and wherever i can. And finding this technique meant a direct usage for cricut with ceramics! So i thought of making a post about it.
The artist behind this technique is Kenny Sing whom you should definitely follow because he shares a great deal of process videos and these are so very helpful. Now if you're a beginner, this page sound can help you outline almost all the processes that you'll need to focus on.
The Technique:
what he does is, he uses Adobe Illustrator to design stencils from scratch. These are then cut out on vinyl (for which we can use our cricut) and then sticks this stencil vinyl upon the surface of the ceramic. Sometimes he uses a heat gun to make sure there are no gaps.
And then he dips the bisque-ware into the glaze and lets it sit to dry out. The stencils are then ripped out gently. Now if you'd like to go into an in depth process of glazing here's a video that i found quite useful.
Cricut Takeaway:
This is the part where your cricut comes in. You can make this with your cricut joy, cricut explore or cricut maker. Though the size restrictions are to be taken into account if you're considering using cricut joy. Know that you can create any designs you want! You can get designs for stencils from websites, apps or create your very own!
You can even create stencils that inculcates a lot of colour a much detailing with the help of contour tool.
If you'd like to know how to make stencil with a cricut, just follow this link. Its a tutorial from makers gonna learn youtube channel. I go to them for a lot of cricut related doubts of mine. They have almost everything about cricut in there.
Anyway, if you'd just like to know if it's easy to make a stencil, let me just let you know the steps pretty quickly.
The Steps:
Go to Design Space App
New project
Upload image from gallery
Remove background and clear the areas that needs to get cleared
Save as a cut file
Size the project according to your need
Click on make it
Set your vinyl on the mat
Cut setting: stencil vinyl
Press go
There! As simple as that.
Given below are snippets from the process that turn.studio has used to make their ceramic patterns.this is the pattern that he created using Adobe Illustrator
The stencil is taken out and this is what it looks like.
The finished cup looks so good! Designs glazed with the stencil technique ensures that the design is longer lasting compared to other modes of creating the design.
Here is another work of his.
Kelly Sing creates this design after careful measurements with reference to the ceramic vase.
The stencil is cut out. Cricut can make 12*24 inch long stencil designs. The design is cut out along the length of the vase
Individual layers are stuck one by one.
And the final piece is also fit onto the vase.
Kelly uses a heat gun and blows over the layers. This makes the vinyl stick stronger to the surface, removing air bubbles giving a cleaner finish.
This time he sprays the glaze solution over the stencil.
Once the glaze is all set, the stencil is removed.
And viola! What a perfection! This is an absolutely must try technique for any ceramic artists out there. Not only did it take a huge load off of the artists but also it brings perfection to the design. Now that's a huge win especially for someone who has to make a bulk of the same design!
This project is one of the many proofs how versatile a cricut can be. Be it whatever that you wish to make, you can always find a way to involve your cricut.
